Review
Yet another triumph by Adam Baron, This Wonderful Thing is a beautiful story of friendship and family. I just adore the way that Baron writes from a child’s perspective, making it a fun, easy and lighthearted read.
In Cymbeline’s latest adventures, he finds his life in pieces when everything seems to go wrong at once. Not only is his house robbed, but his mum’s new partner and his EXTREMELY annoying children have moved in. Meanwhile, across the city two young girls rescue a lost teddy from a riverbank and start to wonder where such a wonderful, perfectly fluffy teddy has come from. As their Mum begins the search to return the teddy, their lives too begin to fall apart around them. But fate always has a plan, and things may not be as bad as they seem.
Unlike the previous Cymbeline books, this story is told from the perspective of two narrators, Cymbeline and Jessica. Their stories are told alongside each other and soon collide in a jaw-dropping plot twist. Their flip-flopping between storylines is super fun and keeps the story with a good pace and plenty to think about. Those who are great at predicting plots may even be able to discover the truth before the end of the book!
I would recommend this book to children who enjoy light-hearted stories with strong themes of friendship, adventure and oodles of humour. It would make a great bedtime read and, like the other Igloo book, contains plenty of opportunities to discuss challenges faced by many children, including divorce, new families and disabilities.

Jessica is playing with her family at the river when she finds a dirty, bedraggled teddy bear in the water.
She has no idea that it will change everything, forever.
Meanwhile, Cymbeline comes home from school to find that his mum’s house has been broken into – and the thieves seemed oddly focused on his toys. Thank goodness he had Not Mr Fluffy, his Bear of Most Extreme Importance, with him.
Soon, Jessica and Cymbeline find themselves swept up in a mystery that spans decades, threatens their families, and turns their lives upside down.
But sometimes, just maybe, a new life can be a really wonderful thing…
