Review
This is another captivating by book by Hannah Gold that combines adventure with environmental issues and conservation.
Hoping for a fresh start after struggling for another baby, Silver Trevelon's parents make the life changing decision to move to Costa Rica. While her artist father settles in to his new job at the turtle rescue center, Silver struggles to adapt to her new life in the jungle. Before long, Silver befriends a local boy, Rafi, who invites Silver to share his biggest secret; he is the guardian of the turtles, and bad things are happening. With the threat of poachers growing every day, Silver and Rafi are forced to risk their lives to save the rare leatherback turtles, finding themselves in more trouble than they ever believed possible.
One of my favourite things about this book is the narrative, which not only highlights the importance of wildlife conservation but also delves into themes of family, healing, and self-discovery. The book is packed full of opportunities to discuss “real-life” experiences and to learn more about the world around us, including poor mental health, moving home, moving country and struggling to communicate with family members.
The characters in Turtle Moon are very likeable and work together well to create an interesting plot. Silver, the main protagonist, shares her raw emotions, thoughts and struggles as she settles into her new life, while Rafi balances her heartache with his positive and optimistic outlook. Together, they make a brilliant team and create an exciting and essential adventure through the rainforest.
This book is a brilliant opportunity to learn about other countries, wildlife and the challenges faced by the turtle population. It is overflowing with wonderful descriptions and a genuine appreciation for the work carried out by conservationist all over the world. I would recommend this book to any reader who loves turtles or is interested in conservation and preserving the natural world around us!

So when Silver’s dad is invited to paint at a turtle rescue centre in Costa Rica, she hopes it’ll be just the adventure the family needs.
Under the hot tropical sun, Silver settles into life at the animal centre. She even witnesses a rare sighting of a leatherback turtle nesting on the beach. But when the turtle’s eggs are stolen, events take a dark and dangerous turn. Can Silver and her new friends track them down before it's too late? It’ll mean journeying into the heart of the jungle …
