Review

Tom Palmer has yet again smashed historical story telling out the park, this time shedding light on the incredible work of the Dutch Resistance during WW2.

Resist is another powerful and easy-to-read story published by Barrington Stoke, perfect for Key Stage 2 and early Key Stage 3 readers. Just like their other books, the pages are clear, the font is friendly, and the language is simple to understand—so it’s great for readers who prefer shorter, more accessible books.

This book tells the incredible true story of a young girl, Edda, who becomes part of the Dutch Resistance during World War II. She bravely helps fight back against the Nazis by delivering secret messages, protecting people in danger, and standing up for what is right. Even though she’s young, her courage makes a huge difference.

The book is exciting, tense, and full of brave moments. It helps you understand what life was like for ordinary people during the war, especially children who were forced to make difficult choices. It shows how bravery isn’t always about fighting—it can be about helping others, speaking the truth, and never giving up.

I absolutely adored this book and will be adding it to my precious pile of WW2-related books! Resist is totally inspiring, gripping, and perfect for anyone who enjoys real-life stories about courage and standing up for others. A brilliant read all round and a must have for KS2 libraries!

Blurb

As the brutal Second World War stretches on with no end in sight, life for ordinary Dutch people in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands is fraught with peril and hardship. There is very little to eat and the population lives under the constant threat of arrest and enslavement.

After the murder of her beloved uncle and the capture of her brother by the Germans, Edda is determined to do anything she can to help the resistance fight back against their oppressors. But what can a teenage girl do and how much risk is she willing to take?
