Review
I picked up Cringe Club after attending a brilliant live event hosted by Emily-Jane Clark with my Year 5/6 group (thank you, Rebel Reading Society! ππΌ). EJ was absolutely fantastic—funny, warm, and completely engaging. She had everyone laughing from start to finish, and I knew instantly that I needed to read her book!
This is such a clever and unique read. The entire story is told through WhatsApp-style chats and notes-app entries, which makes it feel incredibly modern and authentic—like you’re right there in the group chat with the characters. The layout is brought to life with adorable illustrations that tie everything together perfectly.
The story follows three friends—Kimberly, Devon, and Liv—who share their hilariously awkward and cringeworthy moments as they navigate the bumpy road to secondary school. It’s full of friendship, drama, and laugh-out-loud moments, all wrapped up in a wonderfully relatable look at those tricky tween years.
What I loved most was how spot-on it felt for upper Key Stage 2 readers. It’s a great mirror for children on the brink of secondary school, but also a brilliant reminder for parents about just how tough—and funny—those in-between years can be.
I genuinely laughed out loud more than once and raced through the book in a couple of hours. It’s light-hearted, silly in the best way, and full of heart. Fans of Lottie Brooks will absolutely adore Cringe Club!
Blurb
Welcome to the group chat! It's called Cringe Club because, as you might have guessed, it contains a cringe binge of EPIC proportions.
My name is Kennedy King and I have been FORCED to move to London by The Mother. I have just started Hellington High School (aka HELL HIGH). The only GOOD thing about moving is that The Mother has finally agreed to let me have my own phone (guilt present) so I can stay in touch with my best friends. Enter at your own risk (of cringe) and remember . . . what is said in Cringe Club, STAYS in Cringe Club.
