Review

I picked up Antigua de Fortune by Anna Rainbow and Oli Hyatt drawn in by the vibrant cover and intriguing blurb—a defiant young girl destined for the ocean—and I devoured it in just a couple of sittings.

The story is a thrilling mix of magical mermaids and cutthroat pirate adventure. Although it’s not usually my genre, I couldn’t help but fall in love with it!

The authors’ brilliant sense of humour had me laughing out loud, and their descriptions are vivid and so easy to imagine. There’s a touch of violence and blood, balanced perfectly with a story full of bravery, teamwork, and self-acceptance.

I would recommend this to any lover of adventure set at sea, pirate tales, battles between good and evil or anyone looking for a fun, twist-filled tale!

Teaching potential:

As a teacher, I can see this book being an excellent prompt for writing and discussion. Its humour, rich descriptions, and exciting plot offer plenty of opportunities for creative activities, exploring character, setting, and themes of courage and identity.

Blurb

Tiggy has always had the ocean in her blood - and lately, she's been dreaming of mermaids - but she's a high-born girl on the Isle of Fortune, forced to wear dresses, attend balls and (worst of all) comb her wild curls.

But then the Pirate King strikes, wielding deadly turquoise magic, and Tiggy's younger brother is stolen - along with every boy on the island.

Tiggy knows it is time to claim her destiny, take to the high seas and rescue the boys of Fortune ...
