My Thoughts...

Guardians of the New Moon by Eric Huang is an excellent short chapter book packed with adventure, inspired by the lunar calendar and East Asian mythology. After hearing Eric speak through The Rebel Reading Society, I was excited to dive in—and it absolutely lived up to expectations with its fun, fast-paced story and strong characters.

The book itself is incredibly appealing, with an eye-catching cover and beautiful illustrations that really enhance the story. They help break up the chapters perfectly for younger readers, making it feel accessible, engaging, and exciting to read independently or together.

I loved how it weaves competition, bravery, determination, humour, and learning all into one story. I didn’t know much about the lunar calendar or East Asian mythology before, but this brought it to life brilliantly—especially through characters like the nine-tailed fox, elemental dragons, and the zodiac animals.

🌟I’d highly recommend this as a class read, bedtime story, or for independent readers who love mythology, competitions, and illustrated adventures.🌟

All Miaow wants is to enjoy his peaceful, solitary life as a temple guardian catching mice. But when the Jade Emperor invites all creatures on Earth to compete in a Great Race, the reserved cat finds himself reluctantly entering - and worse, socialising!

Spirited and fiery, shapeshifter Ming is Miaow's polar opposite, and she's determined to make him her new best friend. But she hadn't counted on Miaow making other friends too. As the race heats up, things start to unravel... Can the pair (and their friendship) make it to the finish line?
