My Thoughts...
This was another recommendation from one of my students. I usually avoid romance-heavy books, but their excitement was so convincing that I had to give it a go—and I ended up loving it. Honestly, I was gobsmacked, speechless, flabbergasted… I did not see that ending coming!
The story follows Adena, who is left alone in the slums of Loot after her best friend Paedyn is selected for the brutal Purging Trials—something that almost guarantees death. While trying to survive on her own, Adena crosses paths with Mak, a mysterious and guarded Elite with secrets of his own. As they team up to try and reunite with the people they care about before the Trials begin, their journey becomes one of loyalty, danger and unexpected love.
I really enjoyed the simplicity of this book in terms of characters. With only two central figures and a small supporting cast, it was easy to follow and stay invested in their story. That said, I did feel like I was missing a little background knowledge at times, as I hadn’t read the earlier books in the series.
The setting of Loot is gritty and intriguing, and the idea of the Trials adds a really intense, almost barbaric edge to the story. There are moments of violence, threat and some gore, so it’s definitely not one for more sensitive readers.
The first three quarters of the book lean heavily into romance, which isn’t usually my thing—but stick with it. The final quarter completely shifts gears, delivering drama, suspense and twists that make it absolutely worth it.
🌟I would recommend this to confident readers who enjoy romance alongside action, or those who don’t mind a darker edge with some violence mixed in.🌟
