Review
I knew I had to buy War Dog when I saw it was written by Tom Palmer. It also helped that it was a true story about a remarkable dog — I knew my Year 5 and 6 students would love it.
I adore the illustrations, which are beautiful yet simple. They help to tell the story and allow readers of all ages to connect with the emotions behind Judy’s journey.
The story itself is written in a simple yet engaging way. It tells a true story which, at points, is hard to believe — but thankfully, it has a happy ending.
The language is just right: clear but rich with key facts and tier 2 vocabulary that help readers expand their knowledge while staying engaged with the narrative.
I would recommend War Dog to both upper and lower KS2 teachers, especially anyone teaching about war, animals in war, or friendship. It’s a heartwarming and educational story that sparks empathy, discussion, and curiosity.

Judy is a dog who lives on a ship called HMS Grasshopper.
As the ship's mascot, Judy has many duties.
She catches rats, watches out for soldiers who may fall overboard, and she listens out for danger.
Judy loves her crew, and they love her.
She knows that she brings comfort to the men, making her job very important during these hard times. But when her soldiers are taken prisoner and she is separated from her beloved Frank, she must find the strength to keep going.
She is their only hope.
