This is a brilliant book for UKS2 which shines a light on the hidden costs of fast fashion.
Through Hanh’s story, readers learn about the harsh reality faced by children working in illegal garment factories, including long hours, poor conditions, hunger and violence. It really gets you thinking about what happens behind the labels of the clothes we buy.
Stitched Up is also a Barrington Stoke publication, making it particularly accessible. It is printed in a larger font, with a clear layout and lovely illustrations to break up the story. The short, manageable chapters make it a great choice for developing and less confident readers.
My class loved passing this book around as part of our Geography and Science units, and they found it fascinating to learn about the impact of fast fashion and how children can be exploited within the industry. It definitely inspired us to think more carefully before buying new clothes, as well as considering ways to reuse, recycle and upcycle items we no longer want!
