My Thoughts...
I of course had to pick up The Seriously Epic Holiday of Lottie Brooks after adoring the previous books in the series. They are so much fun to read, offer a brilliant break from longer novels, always make me laugh, and I love the hidden sweet, emotional messages woven throughout.
In this diary-style instalment, Lottie and her recently-forgiven BFF Amber are heading off to the mountains for a ski holiday of a lifetime. HOWEVER, things take a drastic turn at the airport when Lottie not only turns up in her horse nightie, but they discover that Amber’s future stepsister is actually an enemy from the past. From there, things go from bad to worse as Lottie attempts to tackle the slopes, tries to win Wally’s approval, and accidentally witnesses something that could change Amber’s life FOREVER.
As always, the humour is absolute perfection - Katie Kirby has such a talent for capturing the awkwardness of growing up in a way that feels completely authentic and laugh-out-loud funny. Lottie’s life is so honest and relatable, and the diary format makes it an easy, engaging read for all.
Beneath all the chaos and comedy, there are some really lovely emotional moments. The friendship between Lottie and Amber continues to develop in such a realistic way, especially as they navigate tricky family changes and shifting relationships. I also love the simple yet hilarious illustrations dotted throughout—they add so much personality and extra humour to each entry!
πI would recommend this to any UKS2 children who fancy something short, accessible and genuinely hilarious. It’s also a great read for children whose parents are in the middle of (or have gone through) a divorce, as well as for friends supporting someone through a similar situation.π
