Review
I was really excited when I found out Hannah Gold was writing another book. I’ve loved her previous stories, especially The Last Bear and Turtle Moon, because they combine adventure with important messages about protecting wildlife and the natural world. I was really looking forward to reading The Lone Husky.
I really enjoyed learning more about huskies and dog sledding. The book includes interesting facts about husky care and real-life racing, which made the story feel authentic and educational. The illustrations throughout the book are beautiful and add something really special to the reading experience.
My favourite character was Blaze the husky. He is brave, loyal and determined to prove himself. He was such a memorable character and easy to care about.
I also liked the background story about April’s family, including her dad, his girlfriend Maria, and the new friendships she forms with other competitors. These parts made the story feel realistic and relatable.
The Lone Husky is beautifully written, heart-warming and full of adventure. It encourages readers to think about the environment and animal welfare, while also inspiring a sense of adventure and curiosity.
It was also fascinating to hear Hannah Gold speak about the book and share photos from her real husky experiences while researching. It made the story feel even more genuine.

April Wood is no stranger to adventure. After all, she lives in the Arctic and her best friend is a polar bear. But when April finds herself volunteering for the Polar Race – a long-distance dog sled race across the frozen tundra – even she wonders if this may be an adventure too far.
April will need all the help she can get if she’s to make it to the finish line. And competition is fierce – with experienced dog sledders, including new boy Finn, who will go to any lengths to win.
But April has something the other teams don’t: Blaze, a solitary husky with a troubled past, who may just prove to be her secret weapon…
